From June to August every year, Goedgedacht and the Path out of Poverty (POP) programme hosts a number of international schools and sports clubs from all over the globe.
The children who visited were thrilled to be here and loved spending time with the children at the different centres. They helped us run evening programmes with our kids, they dug a trench at the Paarl POP centre, played rugby and netball and worked in the garden on Goedgedacht farm.
A group of the younger children in our POP Programme were also treated to a day at the cinema by King Edwards School! This was such an exciting day for them. For many of them it was their first trip to the cinema. They loved the automatic hand dryer in the bathroom almost as much as they loved the movie and ice-cream!
Watching the children say goodbye to each other is always very special. The amazing thing about young people is that no matter where they are from and how different their circumstances are, they are all able to communicate and relate to one another. The challenges they face as young people in 2017 are the same and they are together on the path to becoming young adults.
The days were filled with laughter, tears, and genuine fun. The young people in our programmes also found this such an inspiring experience. They made lifelong friendships; learned social skills and confidence through the various activities and moments shared. We struggled to get them on the bus at the end of the day after the different activities.
We are looking forward to hosting more groups on the farm in the future!
